Bede Art Gallery provides a cultural center where professional artists showcase their work. The gallery, located in the Roncalli Center on Mount Marty College campus, is named after and in remembrance of the Benedictine monk, Bede the Venerable. Monthly exhibits from regional artists are featured throughout the school year, many with an artist’s Gallery Talk and reception. A student exhibit highlights the end of each semester. A distinctive Yankton landmark built in 1950; Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel is considered one of the country’s best examples of western architecture. Saints depicted over the front doorway include Saints Gertrude the Great, Lioba, Scholastica, Benedict, Gregory, Anslem and Bede. At the back of the Upper Chapel is a plaque on the east wall that commemorates the loving memory of the deceased Sisters of the Benedictine Convent of Sacred Heart Monastery. You will be captivated and inspired by the memorial stained-glass windows, the powerful rich sound of the organ and the warm, mellow woodwork in this over 125 year old church. Tours of the church are available by calling the church office.

Completed in 1886, by the Secretary of the Dakota Territory, this stately home is the tallest Queen Anne home in South Dakota. Unique features of the home include heavy double doors in the front entry, high coved ceilings, combination gas and electric chandeliers and replicated wallpaper in the parlors. The home remains in its original 1880s décor with oil paintings by Alice Bullfinch Cramer decorating the walls. Open for guided tours from Memorial Day through Labor Day, Wednesday – Sunday from 1 – 5 p.m. During the off season, the home is open by appointment. Admission is $5 for age 12 to adults and $2 for students under 12.

The capitol replica symbolizes Yankton as being the first capitol of the Dakota Territory from 1861-1883. The replica is patterned after the original Dakota Territorial Capitol built in Yankton in 1862 and torn down in 1886. Displays in the building include photographs of old Yankton, maps of the Dakota Territory, a gallery of former Dakota Territorial governors and a tribute to the local St. John's Masonic Lodge. Visitors will want to view the quilt highlighting Yankton landmarks, made by the four Yankton Quester chapters. For rental and viewing of the capitol contact the Parks & Recreation Department.

Take a step back in time as you enter the Dakota Territorial Museum. The museum holds a large collection of rare memorabilia of early life in the Dakota Territory. Some of the exhibits include the musical instruments of Felix Vinatieri, the band leader for General George Custer’s 7th Calvary band, a Max Copper Vintage Boat Motor and fishing collection, Great Northern railroad caboose and one-room country school. Summer hours include May 1 through Sept. 30, Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday from Noon – 4 p.m. Winter hours are Oct. 1 through April 30, daily from Noon – 4 p.m. and by appointment year-round. Gavins Point Dam, located on the Missouri River, was completed in 1957 as part of the Pick-Sloan Plan. The dam and power plant are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Tour the power plant and learn how it operates. See the generators in action! Open Memorial Day through Labor Day, Friday - Sunday and holidays tours begin at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tours are available to groups off season by appointment. No purses, bags, cameras, cell phones, food or drink allowed in the powerplant. IDs are required for those 17 and older.

On a hillcrest overlooking Lewis and Clark Lake, three giant crosses stand as a reminder of the life and death of Jesus Christ. Down the slope a bell tower, statues, shrinettes, the Way of the Cross, the Living Waters, the Rosary Way and St. Joseph’s Chapel are tucked among the trees. The House of Mary Shrine began in 1972, and continues to grow and inspire those who come and take advantage of the serene peaceful atmosphere. Cabins are available for a quiet inspirational retreat. The Shrine is open year around for private prayer and touring. Special tours in the summer by appointment. Masses are held every Saturday at 9 a.m., and from April – October on Monday at 8:30 a.m. The Rosary is prayed each Sunday at 4 p.m. The gift shop is open summers daily from 1-4 p.m.

Built in 1928 by John Keller, the Ice House was the first artificial ice plant in the area. The individuals who were supposed to purchase the business lost their financing with the onset of the Great Depression, and so it ended up in the hands of Keller's son-in-law, Iner Anderson. Shortly after Prohibition, beer was sold there, and it became a fixture of Yankton. It's one of the only bars in the country with carhop service. However, most people prefer to sit on the "dock" in front of the Ice House while enjoying a beverage and partake in the tradition of smashing empty bottles against the brick wall beneath it. The Anderson family still runs the business, and Jim Anderson is known for his ability to smash cans with his feet at an unprecedented pace. He once appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to display this skill to a national audience.

Being the first territorial capital of the Dakotas, Yankton hosted the trial and hanging of the notorious Jack McCall for the murder of Wild Bill Hickok. The trial began on Dec. 4, 1876 in a courtroom at what is now present day Third Street and Capitol Street. Two days later the jury found McCall guilty. McCall’s hanging took place on March 1, 1877 at the present day intersection of Highway 81 and Highway 50. The site of the hanging is marked by a historical plaque, which is located in the parking lot on the south end of the Human Services Center.

The Meridian Bridge, a long-time landmark in Yankton, is the result of hard work and determination of local citizens. Built in 1924, it was the first permanent bridge crossing the Missouri River. This unique bridge is a “double-decker” with one lane positioned above another. It was constructed as a lift-span bridge to allow riverboat traffic to traverse the river. Up until 1953, it was operated as a toll bridge. The Meridian Bridge was closed in October 2008 to vehicle transportation, but continues on as a 3,029 feet walking bridge and a standing reminder of the days gone by.

Mount Marty College is a beautifully maintained 80-acre campus along the bluffs of the Missouri River. The college offers Bachelor degrees, Associate degrees, pre-professional studies and Masters Programs. Students at Mount Marty are surrounded by excellent academics, strong values and many ways to stay involved. Attractive financial aid packages and scholarships make a Mount Marty education a tremendous value. Founded in 1936 by the Sisters of Saint Benedict, the college is named in memory of Martin Marty, a Benedictine missionary and the area’s first Catholic Bishop.

Pierre Dorian was the first white settler in the Yankton area. He lived among the Yankton Sioux at the time that Lewis and Clark passed through in 1804. Lewis and Clark convinced Dorian to accompany them on their expedition and to serve as an Indian interpreter. Dorian later returned to the Yankton area. His grave was located by a local historian and a memorial marker dedicated in 2002.

Presented by U.S. Submarine Veterans WWII South Dakota Chapter, this historical marker is located near the Missouri River on the West side of the Meridian Bridge. Scorpion was launched on July 20, 1942 and their first patrol was a hunting and mining mission near Honshu in April 1943. Scorpion went on three patrols that earned her a battle star. She was involved with a series of torpedo attacks and gun battles. On Jan. 5, 1944, Scorpion rendezvoused with Herring to transfer an injured man, but heavy seas prevented a safe transfer. Scorpion and 77 courageous crewmen were never seen again.

This memorial is dedicated to all veterans, past, present and future, whose sacrifices continue to protect our freedom. The red, white and blue memorial was designed by Luken Memorials to be up-lifting and reaching to the stars with the bronze eagle taking flight. The wording on the west side “All Gave Some, Some Gave All” refers to the sacrifices of our current and past veterans. The five granite pedestals display lasered scenes particular to each branch of the military. The main feature memorial contains three different colors of granite Rubin Red - India, Sierra White - United States and Blue Pearl - Norway.

Yankton College was the first institution of higher learning in the Dakota Territory open from 1881-1985. Student records and transcripts are available as well as information, memorabilia and pictures of early Yankton College and community. Archers may take advantage of a 28-target NFAA (National Field Archery Association) certified archery range, as well as a practice range. The archery range is set up into two, 14-target rounds and is laid out in a wooded section of the park, giving archers a natural setting to enjoy their sport. Scorecards, provided by Dakota Archery & Outdoor Sports, are available at the range. The range hosts regional archery tournaments and was the site for the Annual NFAA Outdoor Field Archery and 3-D Championship Tournaments in 2005 and 2006. Keep Yankton Beautiful presented this fountain to the City of Yankton in 2006. The fountain reconnects Yankton with its past of being called “The Fountain City”. This fountain fittingly called “Dakota Spirit” was sculpted out of one solid 18 ton block of South Dakota granite from Milbank. The fountain appears to be made of many layers. These layers represent all the different people that make up South Dakota’s past and present.

Fish, fish, everywhere! Built in 1960 on the Missouri River, the hatchery has produced over five billion fish for release in Midwestern waters. In the cool, dimly lit surrounds of the aquarium, visitors become part of the aquatic environment as fish and turtles slowly swim within 13 tanks. Exhibits, displays and aquatic animals located in the aquarium building explain the work and objectives of the hatchery. The hatchery is one of 65 national Federal Hatcheries and Fish Technology Centers operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Open April 1 through Oct. 31 daily from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

A visit to Hebda Family Produce & Prairie Gardens is fun for the entire family. Fresh-picked strawberries, raspberries, apples, fresh vegetables and pumpkins are available throughout the season. They are the farmers market where you will find homemade jams and jellies, fruit pies, salsa, spaghetti sauces, South Dakota made products and many gift ideas. Open June through Dec., Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Karttrax Family Fun Park provides hours of entertainment for the whole family with a miniature golf, go-karts, bumper cars, bumper boats, two tracks, two seaters, kiddie go-karts, kiddie train, concessions and an arcade. Just added Yankton's only fresh cotton candy, snoe cone machine, soft serve ice cream and hot dogs to the concessions. Also newly added are a patio area and seating indoors and out. The Kiwanis 4-H Ice Center is the home to the University of South Dakota Coyote Club Ice Hockey team. Various horse and livestock events are held during the summer months. Take a covered wagon tour through the elk and buffalo herds, as you take in views of the Niobrara River. A guide informs visitors along the way of how the elk and buffalo are raised and the products made from them. Also featured are fallow deer and a longhorn steer named, Boomer. Visitors of all ages enjoy hand feeding the elk and buffalo. Tours are available May 15 through October 2. Reservations are required.

The Missouri National Recreational River is a national park that runs right through Yankton. You will discover stretches of the Wild and Scenic Missouri River, plenty of outdoor activities, miles of trails for hiking, biking and running, many wayside exhibits throughout the river corridor and a variety of historic sites and cultural activities. View the natural beauty and learn some of the diverse history of the recreational river along 100 miles of the South Dakota-Nebraska border. The National Park Service offers a variety of programs at the park and partner sites throughout the River Corridor for children, families, teachers and school field trip groups. With two campgrounds, boating access to Lake Yankton and the Missouri River, day-use areas with a beach and playgrounds and rentable picnic shelters, the Corps of Engineers areas downstream of Gavins Point Dam are popular with recreation enthusiasts from throughout the Midwest!

Join your friends and family for a fun afternoon or entertaining evening of bowling at the Yankton Bowl Family Fun Center. After you are done bowling, order a pizza. Then head to the arcade where kids (and adults too) can try their skill or luck on any of the interactive games, competing for tickets that you can turn in for prizes at the end of your visit. Hours vary depending on the season; so call ahead to check availability and to reserve a bowling lane for your group.

RiverWalk is a public art project focused on bringing outdoor sculptures to downtown Yankton and Riverside Park. New sculptures will be installed annually in May for the public to enjoy. Each year the public has the opportunity to vote for their favorite sculpture, the People’s Choice Award. Votes will be tabulated at the end of each year. The winner will be announced each April, at the sculpture auction and gala.

Come check out a movie at the Carmike Cinemas located in the Yankton Mall. With five theaters, there is an assortment of movies to see. Movies play nightly, along with matinees on weekends and holidays.

Spend an evening – or afternoon – enjoying a production by the Lewis & Clark Theatre Company. The beautiful art deco style building was built in 1902 and has recently undergone many renovations: climate controls, state-of-the-art lights and sound system, new décor and much more! The Theatre has productions scheduled and awaiting guests. Come enjoy the many productions with actors of all ages.

Marian Auditorium is a 765-seat proscenium theatre located in the southwest corner of the Mount Marty College campus. The theatre has been host to a variety of college and community events as well as professional presenters and performers from across the globe. The Riverside Park Amphitheatre is available for events throughout the year. Concerts in the Park are held every Tuesday at 8 p.m. during June, July and August. Each week a different band performs an outdoor concert. Bands come from outside Yankton, as well as local groups. No admission. The amphitheatre is also available for private functions, to make reservations contact the Parks and Recreation Department.

Yankton High School and community events are held at the Summit Activities Center Theatre throughout the year. The main theatre seats 976 and has advanced light and sound, overhead screen and a large stage. The lecture theatre seats 106 and has a retractable wall, dry board and overhead screens. Located on top of scenic Calumet Bluff, the Lewis & Clark Visitor Center overlooks the Missouri River and Lewis and Clark Lake. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Park Service, this center offers early history of the Missouri River and Lewis and Clark, a theater, wildlife displays and a view of Gavins Point Dam. Off-season hours include February 22 through May 14 and Labor Day through October, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Summer hours include May 15 through Labor Day, Sunday - Thursday from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Friday - Saturday from 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.
